Alkemyst is a progressive/power/melodic metal band from France, featuring the lead singer of the band Secret Sphere. They put out an album on Nuclear Blast a few years ago and it got little notice; however their new album on Nightmare Records is starting a good bit of discussion, mainly because it is good.

The sound of their music is in the vein of bands like: Vision Divine, Spheric Universe Experience, Circus Maximus, Opeth, and of course Secret Sphere, but not just like any of them. Unlike all the bands just listed Alkemyst does not have a keyboard player, even though they do have some piano parts placed throughout the album.

The music on this album is always moving and changing, from unplugged guitars and haunting melodies (very Opeth sounding) to blistering fast power metal parts. It really helps their usual six plus minute songs sound no where near as long. The vocals really get the job done on this album, with soft slow parts that could pull tears from stone, and high parts that soar as high as eagles. The musicianship is out of this world every part of it shines, the drumming, the riffing, the bass. The band spent a lot of time making sure all the parts fit together just right. In short, everything on this album from the guitar solos, to the sound clips from the “Grapes of Wrath”, to the song writing (which is some the best I have ever heard on a metal disc) are meant to move you, and they do.

There are only eight songs on this album (not counting the Helloween cover). Which is kinda sad, but at least there is no filler. The stand out songs would have to be: “The Beast With in” “Another You” the soft and sad “Everlasting Farewells” and the best in my opinion being “When the Morning Comes”.

This is one of the best albums I have heard in a long time, and if you are a fan of bands like: Vision Divine, Spheric Universe Experience, Circus Maximus, Opeth, and Secret Sphere, you have to check out this album.

ROCK ON!!!!
