A Day To Remember has come a long way since their first album, “And There Name Was Treason”, released in 2005. They started off as a pop punk band, and have worked there way up to something so much more. Now, I don’t normally listen to anything with the “pop” genre tagged onto the name, but these guys have enough breakdowns, two-steps, and gang vocals to keep even the most “br00tal” “tuff” guy pleased. They would fit in on tour with New Found Glory and at the same time could tour with Recon or (insert tough-guy metal act here).
The new album is titled “Homesick”, and the idea behind the name is paying tribute to the open road, touring, missing loved ones, and everything between. Jeremy Mckinnon, the lead vocalist of the band, has progressed as much lyrically as he has vocally. Tom Denney, who plays guitar in the band, has also progressed on Homesick. The guitars are so much heavier than the previous albums, leading one to believe he may have tuned down, creating the dirty chugs we get on Homesick that we did not on the previous albums. Sure, there were chugs, but they weren’t like THIS.
There are also quite a few guest vocals on this album. On number three, “I’m Made of Wax, Larry, What Are You Made of?” we get guest vocals from Mike, Hranica of The Devil Wears Prada. On number seven, “Welcome To The Family” we get guest vocals coming from Vincent Bennett of The Acacia Strain (my favorite band!) though you can’t really tell any guest vocals are there at all. And on track 12, “If It Means A Lot To You” guest vocals come from Sierra Kusterbeck of VersaEmerge.
The Album is a heartfelt attempt to portray what every band goes through on tour, and it makes perfectly known that just because rock n roll is fun, doesn’t necessarily mean playing shows in a permanently touring band is the best feeling in the world. Or there just a bunch of whiney pussies.
